Humble Beginnings, Hard Work, and Love
Humble Beginnings (1892)
Engracia Cruz-Reyes, or Aling Asiang, was born on April 16, 1892, in Navotas. Her mother ran a small carinderia where Asiang developed her passion for cooking. Despite limited education, her resourcefulness and skill shaped her future.

Family and Culinary Passion (1912)
In 1912, Asiang married Alexander Reyes and raised 13 children. To support her family, she turned her cooking into a livelihood, laying the foundation for her future success in the culinary world.

The Lapu-Lapu Eatery
Asiang converted part of her home into an eatery called “Lapu-Lapu,” which gained popularity for dishes like pancit luglog and lumpiang ubod. It became a community favorite, attracting students and locals alike.

The Birth of The Aristocrat (1936)
In 1936, The Aristocrat began as a rolling store in Luneta Park. It later moved to Roxas Boulevard, where it still stands as a beloved icon of Filipino cuisine.

Legacy of Generosity
Known as the "Mother of Filipino Cooking," Asiang supported local vendors and shared her success with her community. Her contributions to Filipino culture earned her lasting admiration.

A Landmark of Filipino History
Surviving wars and natural disasters, The Aristocrat became a cultural pillar. A historical marker installed in 2013 solidified its role as a symbol of Filipino resilience and heritage.
